The Phil-Harmonic Podcast Episode 8

Hello! Well, we’re back.

I’ve managed to slot 3 episodes neatly into the month of May and this is the third and final of them.

I decided quite early on that I wanted to open this episode with some deeper, seductive grooves. Recently I went back through the back catalogue of Tribal Vision and Iboga Records (two of my absolute favourite underground progressive labels) to see what they’ve been up to of late. And I was suitably impressed. Hence why the opening part of this mix is a real ‘Tribal Vision-Iboga’ love-in. Some fantastically textured dancefloor music here from the likes of Swedish duo Ticon, Danish outfit Phony Orphants and Italian producer Andrea Bertolini.

Just the other side of Mat Zo’s new release on Anjunabeats, we have 4 big riffed tech trancers that not only complement each other perfectly, but take the mix into darker territory. That sequence of 4 ends on the utterly mind-blowing Chris Schweizer bootleg of Kernkraft 400. It was hammered during the A State Of Trance 500 shows and Armin played it when I saw him in London at the end of April. I never thought it would see the light of day but luckily Mr. Schweizer is a generous guy. The easiest pick for ‘Tune Of The Episode’ I will ever have to make.

In our more uplifting second hour we have all the usual driving basslines and sumptuous breakdowns. I’ve got it rolling with a few much needed vocal tracks – Above & Beyond’s soon-to-be-released follow-up to Sun & Moon, Thing Called Love, which I’ve been meaning to play since this podcast started, and Myon & Shane 54’s fantastic remix of Armin Van Buuren’s Drowning, which seems to give this vocal everything the original was missing.

Also, look out for Trance Arts’ remix of Aerian – Reach. Budding Dutch producer, Menno Meijer has recently set up his own digital label and this 3 track package, its third release, proves it’s a small label with a big future. You won’t find this track on Beatport, or in any other online shop. To support it head straight to: www.aerianrecords.com

Unfortunately, this week’s mix does not end on the usual ‘big oldie’. I had one in the pipeline to play but, having already changed my mind about my selection at the last second, my CD decided to stop on me in the CDJ. The connoisseurs amongst you may notice Arizona vs. Passiva – Halo mixing in as the music fades. The other tracks on that particular disc appear to be fine, so simple case of sod’s law – such is life. Anyway, I’ll have a massive oldie and a regulation ‘vinyl mode wind down’ for you in our next outing, without fail.

The Phil-Harmonic Podcast Episode 7

Hello, trance fans!

Two weeks ago TPHP whisked you back in time with a choice selection of oldies, this week my podcast returns to its more regular format. To say I was spoilt for choice this week is a massive understatement. April and May have not disappointed, so there’s been a lot to squeeze into this episode. And squeeze I have; this week I’ve got 21 belters for you.

In our progressive hour we’ve got the big rolling bassline of Lee Osborne’s Questions, Sander Van Doorn’s whistling anthem, Koko, and finally we get the release of Andy Moor and Mike Dierickx’s collaboration, Spirit’s Pulse. Tritonal provide the only full vocal track of the mix, but what a vocal it is – Shogun on the remix duties once again.

Later on, one of my absolute favourite producers over the last couple of years, Jochen Miller gets his first outing on this podcast, a simple but stunningly effective collaboration with Markus Schulz – Rotunda.

And, as always, we hit top speed for the final half an hour so – this week’s closing 30 mins is a fiendishly aggressive, string driven affair. Dart Rayne’s Arctic Sunrise and Philippe El Sisi’s Era are real highlights.

Only room for two older tunes this week. Nitrous Oxide’s legendary 2006 anthem, North Pole makes a welcome appearance – definitely one of Anjuna’s standout releases. And the final track is another throw back to my old hard trance days. When Gaz West was one of my favourite producers, all those years ago, I hammered the Dark By Design remix of this track. Jon The Baptist’s original Twilight, with its deep bass, acid lines and sweeping riff, slots onto the end of this set pretty much perfectly.

The Phil-Harmonic Podcast Episode 6

Hi all,

May begins and here I am, straight back in there with some more trance goodness.

Last weekend I was out and about seeing Armin Van Buuren deliver a 4 hour mixing masterclass at Brixton’s O2 Academy. Despite the fact the audience were left full on melting in the venue’s humid, completely un- air-conditioned main room, Armin himself didn’t disappoint. Whatever people’s qualms about his overall track selection, anyone with even a semblance of appreciation for DJing as an art can’t help but be dazzled by his mixing style. I don’t care what anyone says, Armin deserves his DJ Mag No. 1 slot more than Tiesto ever did.

But what of this week’s mix?

Well, noticing that Episode 2 has been by far the most popular edition of this podcast so far and feeling that it might be worth staying on the hunt for new material for another week longer, I decided to dish up another 2 hours of big oldies. As promised, keeping you on your toes.

Unlike most episodes, there was very little actual planning to this one – I just whacked on Mainline by 4 Strings and rode the key scale from one end to the other and back again. Maybe that works in this mix’s favour, maybe it doesn’t. I’ll let you be the judge.

The likes of Time To Die, The Dawn, Ramsterdam and Killa are all tracks I’ve played a lot in my sets over the last few years and they make reappearances here alongside a handful more huge melodic oldies. There’s plenty of Sean Tyas and plenty of material from Mr. Van Buuren’s original ‘A State Of Trance’ label, which makes for another rocking 2 hours.

I also included DJs United – Remember Love, a track that Armin slipped into his 4 hour set last weekend and seemed to go down quite well with some of the people I was with. It seems as though with the first anniversary of last year’s horrific Love Parade disaster fast approaching, Armin is making sure we do remember – as was the slogan “We Will Never Forget”.

18. 3rd Moon – Monsun [A State Of Trance]
19. Dash Berlin feat. Emma Hewitt – Waiting (Sean Tyas Remix) [Aropa Records]
