The Phil-Harmonic Podcast Episode 10

Welcome one and all,

This fledgling podcast enters double figures and to celebrate that fact I have a very special episode here for you. Not special in format, style or even length; just special in the sense that I think it’s one of the best recorded sets I’ve ever put together. Most certainly the product of 4 weeks intense tune hunting and an afternoon’s mixing where everything just seemed to come together.

The only unusual thing about this mix is that, by my own standards, I’ve gone a bit vocal crazy. When I’m compiling a mix I never have a specific number of vocal tracks in mind. I just pick the tracks that best suit the sound I’m going for, whether they have vocals or not. So far, most episodes have had about 2-5 full vocal tracks in them; this episode has a whopping 10.

Amongst those 10, there are 2 offerings from Irish singer-songwriter, Neev Kennedy, a killer reworking of the 1999 pop-rock classic, Glorious by Andreas Johnson, a fresh remix of Marco V’s Propaganda Part 1 single, Unprepared, and a new remix of Above & Beyond’s Thing Called Love.

The two big album releases in trance music over the last week or so have been remix packages of Armin Van Buuren’s Mirage and Aly & Fila’s Rising Sun. And when you throw into the bargain Gareth Emery’s full release of his Northern Lights track Fight The Sunrise, it’s meant that the second more uplifting hour isn’t short of some vocals as well. Take A Moment, Fight The Sunrise and I’ll Be OK all come one after the other, giving you the opportunity for a good ‘ld sing along.

Room for two oldies this week and they are both tracks that, for me, come under the category of ‘shit, forgot how good this one was’! New York trance producer, DJ Eco’s 2007 single Light At The End is one of the most original and insanely euphoric trance records you’re ever likely to hear. Had been a long time since I’d heard this one, let alone dropped it. Our final track is one of those 1998/1999 mega-classics that got a whole generation hooked. Deep bass, ‘rough-around-the-edges’ production values, fast paced and an unmistakeable melody. You can tell this one’s an old one because the remixer is Ferry Corsten under his Moonman alias – an alias Ferry hasn’t used for well over 12 years.

The other thing that marks my double figures milestone, of course – and my facebook friends will have already seen me prattling on about it – is that I now have a working RSS feed for this podcast. What that means in ‘non-geek’ terms is that this podcast is now available for subscription through iTunes, WinAmp or whatever other podcast medium you like to use.

The Phil-Harmonic Podcast Episode 9

Hello all,

We’re racing on into summer now, even if the sun is having reservations about following us there. That said, it’s apparently been the driest spring for a century here in the UK. Thankfully, this week’s mix is positively wet with creative juices – as sordid as that sounds.

I decided that I was going to mix this episode without burning any fresh CDs especially for it, giving me a chance to use up some big tunes from this year that were yet to make an appearance. We also pick up the pace a lot quicker than usual, getting into those driving tempos well before the hour mark.

Our progressive openings include alternative remixes of, for my money, the best two vocal tracks of the year so far. You Belong To Me and Broken Down are both unleashed for the second time on this podcast, this time in their DJ Feel and Ronski Speed guises respectively. Dennis Sheperd’s new release on Enhanced Progressive joins them and absolutely shines.

But we’re full to the brim with uplifting material this time out – including Ukraine’s Vol Deeman with Magnetica, Matt Skyer’s epic new remix of Sunny Lax’s Always, Venezuela’s Manuel Rocca serves up White Clouds and there’s a trans-Atlantic collaboration between London’s Sophie Sugar and New Jersey’s Tom Colontonio.

Far more oldies in there for you this week. There’s a fantastic vocal trance track from early last year featuring the talents of Emma Hewitt, the ominous piano riff of tech trance tune Vergatron and Sophie Sugar’s Sense Of Connection – which now means that 3 out of 4 of Sophie’s massive trancers from 2007 have appeared in this podcast at some point or another.

And of course, the big news in trance music this week has been the release of Above & Beyond’s second studio album, Group Therapy, which ends a long 6 year wait for a follow up to the masterful Tri-State. Vocalist Richard Bedford features heavily on the album and the wider public have got to hear his voice in the shape of Radio One playlisted singles Sun & Moon and Thing Called Love. I’ve already tipped my metaphorical hat to the album’s pending release by playing both singles, but to close off this mix I’ve dropped the original A&B-Richard Bedford collaboration – Alone Tonight. The Ronski Speed remix is my pick of the many versions that were released in 2006.
