The Phil-Harmonic Podcast Episode 47

Welcome to 2013 and, more importantly, welcome to the very first TPHP produced from my new London base. I've got to admit, going through my usual podcast routines in what is quite a different setting has been surreal in itself. Standing at my Pioneers on a Saturday afternoon, everything was exactly the same, yet at the same time so radically different.

If you’re a fellow Ink employee and you've found this blog via my little piece in the monthly newsletter, Inkspiration, a special hello to you. Yes, this is what I get up to when I’m not knee-deep in Sales Logix up on 3rd Floor.

I did promise that the podcast would return fairly sharpish in 2013 and regrettably I've let a few boozey weekends wrestle me away from my CDJs since the turn of the year. Understandable though, as my impending birthday and left over festive excitement always make January a really busy one. As I keep mentioning, Jan 2012 was insane; Jan 2013 has been almost as mad, particularly given the recent move to London. All I can promise is that I will strain every sinew to bring you Phil-Harmonic riches with the usual regularity. Alas, Emma Hewitt once sang, “there’s not enough time”!

Speaking of Emma Hewitt, we actually kick off with Emma’s unmistakable vocals in Episode 47; Ost & Meyer’s remix of Calm Down sets the initial tone for what is really a ‘catch up’ set. The podcast was very much on ice during those December weeks when thoughts were firmly on moving to London, so naturally there are plenty of loose ends to tie up from 2012. Ben Collier of Room 1ne Sessions will be pleased to see that a few of these little gems have been plucked from his final podcast of 2012. Very nice that was too.

Highlights in this new episode for me are a superb euphoric double bill from Matt Bukovski, who since his remix of Snow Leopard last year has been doing all kinds of good work, the thundering bassline of Faruk Sabanci’s Centurion remix and the exceptional recent single from W&W, Lift Off – one our group have all been talking about since hearing it on Mainstage and Hardwell’s On Air.

My final ‘classic’ this week was going to be Lee Haslam – The Future, a layered, rolling, soaring trancer the like of which they don’t tend to make anymore. It was one of Lee’s first significant marks on trance music after his Tidy head honcho days yet, weirdly, a track you won’t see much mention of on his discographies. Still, one of my favourites on Monster Tunes when it was released.

But noticing that we were running a bit short this week, I've whipped out James Lawson’s remix of Jason Cortez – God. Pretty fitting from a personal perspective, as I’m currently reading Christopher Hitchens – God Is Not Great... But that’s a debate for another forum altogether.

Busy times for the Phil-Harmonic Podcast continue into the coming weeks. Some of you may have seen on Facebook that I’m DJing at The Cube in Brighton for a trance and progressive night called Transcend on the 31st of January. If you’re able to come and support, it would be fantastic to see you. Things kick off at 8pm. I've also done a 30 minute guestmix for the Transcend podcast, A Higher State, which you’ll be able to pick up in a couple of weekends time. I'll post that here (with the next episode of TPHP), along with my Inkspiration entry, but look out for them both on Facebook and Twitter.

The milestone of 50 episodes fast approaches, and meanwhile myself and Ben Collier are planning something cool for Episode 48. Stay tuned for that!

All for now, everyone. Keep trancing.
