The Phil-Harmonic Podcast Episode 83

Hello one and all,

Never before has a new year felt like such a fresh start. Recharged after 2 weeks in the tropical Sri Lankan sun, 2014 is really only just bedding in and already I have so much to talk and be excited about.

First thing to say is that over the course of last few days I have toyed seriously with retiring this blog. Or at least, retiring it as a vehicle for endlessly rambling about myself, my life and music. In the end, what I have decided is that it will remain a place for podcast tracklists and, other than that, merely as a way of promoting my DJing activities and my residency with Transcend. I did criticise myself last year for not putting enough effort into the blog, when in actual fact this was probably just the natural way of things. As much as a feel like the blog is an integral part of the podcast (its look, its feel, its character), many other things are taking priority.

I think it's fair to say that people know what the format for my podcast is now. They know about the kinds of sets I like to do and for what reasons. They know about the Ibiza Specials, they know about the occasional Extended Sessions and other specials. Time to let the music do the talking again.

But for readily accessible tracklists for all podcasts, for embedded widgets to all my mixes throughout the year and, of course, for details about when and where I will be DJing in 2014, here is still the place.

Two things to very quickly mention before I deliver our first podcast of 2014.

Firstly, as mentioned in That Was 2013, I am now a resident for Ben Dursley's Bristol-based trance event, Transcend. This is obviously hugely exciting for me and means that I can now focus on helping Ben build what we all hope (and suspect) will be a recognised brand in UK trance music. One of the ways I'll be helping Ben to begin with will be to take it in turns with our other residents (Calvin Karass and Ben himself) mixing Transcend's weekly show 'A Higher State'. These will be available on Fridays and I will be posting them here along with my own podcast. I'll first be on duty on Friday 7th of February.

And secondly, the even greater news. My first involvement with Transcend in 2014 will be to DJ b2b with Ben as Dickinson & Dursley on the same line up as Signum and The Thrillseekers. For me, this is an absolute dream come true. Not only to be DJing alongside recognised names, but names that I have been listening to since the very beginning of my own trance journey over a decade and a half ago. Hopefully, this is a sign of things to come. Date on the banner below... if you live in the south of England, I expect to see you there! Do contact me directly if you need more details.

TPHP presents Global EDM Radio - The Farewell Party Mix 2013 ::iTunes Only Bonus Mix::

“You say you want total freedom, you say you want a new type of world. So, I'm just asking, how far are you willing to go?..."

Happy New Year everyone!!

The following mix is an exclusive 3 hour set I did for Global EDM Radio's 'Farewell Party' in October. While originally planned as a 10 day marathon goodbye to the station (which was about to close down for good), the 'Farewell Party' instead marked a transition to new management and was a fitting tribute to the original founders of the project. (Of which I became a part during the summer of this year.)

In the end, this set did turn out to be a bit of a personal farewell from Global EDM Radio, as I was, unexpectedly I must admit, cut loose by the station after the 'Farewell Party'. As always in life, nothing ventured nothing gained, and TPHP marches on with its head held high.

This mix, much like my failed Trance Sanctuary competition entry from much earlier in the year, is now only available to download via iTunes. It will not be available, streamable or otherwise, via any other medium. Those subscribed only need to refresh their Phil-Harmonic Podcast feed in iTunes.

This set is by no means the most flawless of offerings. I did in on a Saturday afternoon, at relatively short-notice, moderately hungover and still suffering from the excesses of the previous weekend. But what it is is a very varied playlist which shows you just how far you can take a set given enough time to build it. If you search the opening and closing tracks of this set in Youtube, you will wonder how the f*ck I've got from one track to the other, even in 3 hours. Sets that contain music from both Tribal Vision and Tidy are rare, let me tell you.

You've got shades of Poolside Progressive at the start, some of my usual stuff in the middle and some truly mammoth hard trance to finish things off. Some stuff is old; some stuff is new. This is a real journey - so lock yourselves in.

Without rambling on, this set and blog is also my small thank you to all those who have supported me in 2013. From a DJing and podcasting point-of-view, this year has been everything I wanted and more, especially considering 2013 was only my first full year in London. I have progressed in every sense and the shows of faith and compliments I've received from people this year have been mind-blowing.

Whether it be travelling to see me at a gig, sending me a nice message on Facebook or Twitter or even just clicking to download even just one episode of The Phil-Harmonic Podcast - thank you! Have a prosperous and positive 2014!
