THAT WAS 2013 – PART 1

Things that don’t evolve, don’t survive.

This is true in so many walks for life, not just the animal kingdom. Just when you think you are comfortable with the way things are, something comes along to shake things up. And like the endangered species that was once roamed its domain in great, sweeping numbers only to diminish and dwindle, this podcast has gone from bombarding its listeners weekly to hardly being able to get an episode out. Life is changing; so is my life as a DJ.

Back in around March of 2013, this podcast ventured into a new phase – a second phase. Now, at the start of 2015, a third phase beckons. But first, it’s time to do my yearly review in its traditional ‘That Was’ format for the very last time. That’s not to say I won’t review the year in some form in the future but, like the weekly format of TPHP itself, it feels like ‘That Was’ has run its own course.

Moreover, this will actually be a condensed or simplified version of ‘That Was’. While the three 2 hour episode format will remain the same as last year, the blog itself, overall, will be neatly reduced in size. That’s not to suggest there is less to say (if anything there is even more to reflect on), but time constraints require I be more concise. I thoroughly enjoying doing these so I really I wish I had the more hours to pour into them.

And as it happens, this particular That Was will mark the last time I ever write anything of note in this blog. The blog will remain purely as a personal reference point on tracklists and as a home for my RSS feed. For me, this brings the curtain down on well over a decade of forum crusading, keyboard warrior conflict and verbose soap-box preaching  in various incarnations and guises... (all of course, on the web.)

So, here we go. 3 mixes, 6 hours of music, 1 Hulk-smashing ram-raid through another year in that beautiful thing we call trance music. Here is the first of them.

Well, it wouldn't be right or proper to post a blog this week without saying a few words. There's so much to be excited about at the moment and, as is often the case when a year closes out, change is in the air. It's all good change too. The kind of change that has to be considered an upgrade on what has gone before.

This week's podcast, in distinct contrast to last week's, isn't even that good an episode. But that just emphasises the need for adjustment.

Since the summer, TPHP has really been jolted out of its weekly routine. Since it went weekly in early 2013, I've been pretty good at keeping things on track but some things have been happening of late that have turned my attention elsewhere.

I said in last year's review blog that my target for 2014 was to do 10 public gigs. And by the time the year closes, I will have succeeded in doing that. (Which I'm so happy about, I must say.) 

But with those gigs have come a lot of learning - particularly after Ibiza. It's led me to re-evaluate a lot of things. As well as embarking on a huge project to put my music collection through Rekordbox, I'm now feeling the need to channel my practice time into other areas - rather than following the same format week-in-week out. Doing my podcast bi-weekly and then weekly has served me well. But I've reached the stage now where its not helping me get any better.

Meanwhile, my involvement with the night I'm resident for - Transcend - continues to grow. On the 20th of December, Transcend launches in London for the first time. With another headliner still to announce next week, we already welcome James Dymond to celebrate what we hope will be a long and successful period of Transcend doing what it does best in the capital.

I've thoroughly enjoyed working with Ben, Karl, Alex and Chris on Transcend so far. And now that it is on the brink of moving to London, my desire to get involved and help push it on increases with every passing day.

To make time for this, TPHP is going to move to being a monthly podcast as of January. This blog will be almost completely retired, That Was 2014 being the last yearly review in this format. I will also be bringing TPHP under Transcend's umbrella and pushing it as an official sister podcast to Transcend's own - A Higher State.

Basically - all you need to know is - expect to see plenty from me in 2015, flying the Transcend flag in London at all times! See you on the 20th!

This is a 'Best Of Edition' with far fewer of my own picks, and brings together some new selections with some stand outs from the original 2011 and 2012 efforts. Arguably the most complete and balanced of the series. This contains many many memories not just of our 2014 trip but of the ones before it too.

After a period of inactivity, I will be getting this podcast back on its feet in the coming weeks. They'll also be some revamping and reimagining of the whole thing before the end of the year.

The Phil-Harmonic Podcast Episode 100 (Phil-Harmonic Classics)

I'm not much of a blogger these days, as thriftier word counts on these pages have shown over the last year or so. But sometimes a milestone passes that is difficult to leave without comment.

There is something uniquely satisfying about the number 100. A mighty century indeed; the big Roman ‘C’, if you will. I have finally reached 100 episodes of The Phil-Harmonic Podcast and, believe me, it feels weird to be able to say that.

I look back on the podcast’s discography and each episode still evokes inextinguishable moods and memories. I still remember putting together Episode 1 as if it were yesterday. But you’ll be pleased to hear that this pointless sentimentality is tempered by the fact that, driven by its many phases and evolutions, amply supplemented by the ever going positivity I get from working with Transcend, TPHP is far from done and looking to the future like ever before.

In the run up to this sizeable landmark, there has been a bit of a sabbatical, an enforced rest period. It feels like a long time since Episode 99 (which unexpectedly got 178 SoundCloud downloads, by the way). Not only did I decide to take a few weeks out to get TPHP100 fully prepared but a dose of the worst man flu you can possibly imagine left me pretty much creatively immobilised for 10 days. But I'm back now, feeling refreshed and building up an arsenal of tunes that will propel us into triple figures in a blaze of technicolour trance music.

It feels fitting that Episode 100 coincides with a natural reboot in energy and well-being. Podcast-wise, there’s plenty to look forward, including an Extended Summer Session and more parts of 2014’s Ibiza Specials.

But what of TPHP100 itself? Well, having been off the radar for a month or so, it’s nice that Episode 100 redresses the balance in a big way. You've missed my regular stream of trance? It’s time to fill the void. No, it’s time to gorge on high tempo goodness.

The Phil-Harmonic Podcast 100 will bring you 8 mixes in 8 days. A 3 hour set from myself and a 1 hour set every day for 7 days from some of my DJing friends, including my fellow residents from Transcend. They will all be posted in the usual fashion, on SoundCloud, MixCloud, iTunes and, of course, as a blog of widgets here…. (barring any copyright headaches from the most former in that list, of course…) I won’t write here at length about every mix, but I’ll be giving them plenty of airtime in social media circles.

One of the best things about being a resident for Transcend, and I suppose about moving to London as well, is that it has allowed me to build up a great network of fellow DJs – or as I prefer to call them, friends who are DJs. Brighton-based brothers and Ethos and Elevation Audio regulars, SMX Project, Ben Collier of Room 1ne Sessions, our partners in crime for Ibiza this summer, the Journey boys over in Cardiff (Hywel Matthews, Richie Knight, Joe Byrne and Stu Grady), production wizard, Everlight, and JRM up in Birmingham, Killswitch Radio’s Tom Bradshaw and the main man behind my Renegade Transmission stint, Echo Bravo from across the pond. Sadly, not all are represented in this milestone celebration (I will be working with some of them in other ways over the course of the next few months), but they are all very worthy of a mention. Hats off to you all.

Where do we begin? Well, typically, with me. Since starting to DJ in 2007, a list of definitive, all-time, immovable favourites has started to form and over the course of doing this podcast it has really crystallised in my mind. This actually started with a journal I did on Last.fm. Inside the first 10 episodes of TPHP, I did 3 sets that tried to bring all those favourites together. Somehow, these sets didn't quite work. At least I didn't feel so.

Subsequently, the show’s ‘Phil-Harmonic Golden Oldie’ concept has allowed me to revisit many forgotten greats. Finally, I've been able to bring these records together in a way that sounds meaningful, coherent and decisive. Mainly made up of trance records from that 2005-2007 era that really was the start of my true trance ‘education’, this is the set that defines me both as a DJ and as a lover of trance music.

While there is some slight crossover, these are the years before Episode 50 – ever-present and never old. I hope you enjoy!

Phil Dickinson Live @ Transcend, The Sound of Ibiza (23.05.2014)


While my blog may be pretty quiet these days (or ramble free, you might say), some gigs pass where a few words just have to be shared. 

One such gig was the one that happened Friday just gone. The latest Transcend turned out to be the greatest Transcend there has ever been. While having Signum and The Thrillseekers playing for us earlier this year was 'dream come true' territory and an unforgettable night, certainly in terms of atmosphere we have never had anything better than what took place on Friday. The mighty wax definitely played its magical part.

But it's not that that I really want to talk about. In typically narcissistic fashion, it's my own set I want to talk about. Every set has a story, and not least this one. This week's podcast is an hour section of my own hour an half set. The remit was very much Ibiza, but also very much warm up. I had a really torrid time getting this set together but when it finally did come together I knew I was onto something.

But the thing about doing gigs is that there's always something to be learned. Coming outside the realm of the bedroom DJ is a completely different challenge and the learning curve is so much steeper. This set in the end was running very short and I had to delve into my 'box' to keep it going. That I did and ended up making one of the poorest track selections I've ever made for a gig. That in itself knocked me off balance and the final two transitions were uncharacteristically poor. As I walked back to my hotel to get changed, I really beat myself up about it. All I hoped was that there was enough of my set recorded to trim the final two tracks off and still have enough of a set to share here.

By some miracle of the DJing gods, the final recording was almost exactly an hour and ends at exactly the point I would've trimmed it. No editing required.

Why do I tell you this? Well, because another gig done, another lesson learned. I was told afterwards that I nailed this warm up and got the vibe just right. In essence, I thoroughly got away with something that I will never do again - doing a house set without at least another half hour of appropriate tunes.... All good experience!

Coming up this Thursday, Transend returns to kick off the Easter weekend, a weekend that readers of my blog will know is always eventful and memorable - year in, year out. Headlining this time, we have a 2 hour set from a rising star in the scene and Bristol local, Ian Standerwick. We also have some of the lads behind the Cardiff-based night, Journey, on the bill this time. Definitely an exciting evening ahead.
