The Phil-Harmonic Podcast Episode 56

After rambling on a bit about Will.I.Amgate last week, a more word thrifty blog seems in order.

But while the blog may be shorter, this week's episode most certainly isn't. It's ran over by a spectacular 10 mins+. I did anticipate that this one might be lengthy but it wasn't until I was actually mixing the thing that I realized that playing two tracks by Photographer was going to dramatically extend proceedings. 9 mins plus each; And they are fans of those 64 measure intros.

Anyway, enough DJ tech geek talk. So much good melodic music in this week's uptempo episode.

I've started things off with a darker, tech angle in the shape of Boom, Zeus and Vanilla, three tracks which slot very nicely into each other and a good way to ease into the more driving stuff.

Later on, look out for those 2 Photographer productions, an incredible new Bryan Kearney uplifter and the Mortal Kombat themed banger, Fatality. Also, a couple of oldies that I think will surprise people this week - in particular an old remix by John O'Callaghan that will get a few memories flowing for anyone who was clubbing when it was released. Really takes this mix in a welcome new direction too.

The Phil-Harmonic Podcast Episode 55

Greetings Traveller!

Welcome once again to the unstoppable dance music juggernaut that is, The Phil-Harmonic Podcast. Life continues at a relentless pace.

The big news in trance this week has been the shit storm created by Will.I.Am’s ripping off of Mat Zo and Arty’s 2011 Anjuna release, Rebound. Rebound was a big record for me in 2011. Despite initially not doing much for me, it made its way into my That Was 2011 review mix by December and still, to this day, reminds me vividly of Armin Van Buuren’s set at Brixton Academy that year. It’s a great record and one that sounds pretty unique even now.

Covering and sampling is something that is rife in modern music. It’s not even something I’m absolutely against outright.

When I first heard that Will.I.Am and Chris Brown had used Rebound in their new track, Let’s Go, I was actually reasonably indifferent. As much as I like his music, Mat Zo to me was building a reputation as a slight prim donna, like Gareth Emery, endlessly finding ways to rub up the scene’s trolls the wrong way.

But it’s not until you actually hear how Rebound has been used that you appreciate the injustice. It’s a shameless lifting of the original and an artistic bastardisation that shows just how hopelessly lost and creatively moribund the most mainstream echelons of music have become. Welcome to the graveyard of the culturally retarded.

Not only that, but it came to light later on that Mat Zo and Arty had in fact politely declined the opportunity to work on a commercial version with Will.I.Am. The fact that he went ahead and used it anyway, without the permission of Anjunabeats, is a massive insult to everyone who makes and listens to music. A day later, Laidback Luke tweeted to say that he had e-mailed the producers and they had said it was all cleared beforehand. You sense that a certain amount of cash is going to be paid, not just to get the new Will.I.Am CD legally onto shelves, but also to significantly rewrite accepted history.

The best part of all this though was trance music’s collective reaction via social media. The sleepy, secluded village of trance music arrived at the gates of the seedy, fad-ridden, artificial metropolis that is mainstream music, armed with pitchforks and flaming torches.

Some of it was over the top, but it was hilarious to see the trance community give Will.I.Am a collective “F*ck you.” Best of all was Ben Nicky’s retort to Chris Brown’s claim that he didn’t even know who Mat Zo and Arty were. “You will when you get your cheque book out”, he tweeted. Mat Zo’s first post on Facebook in response was pure class. And his second status a day later simply read, “Where is the love? LOL”

Expect Rebound to make a token appearance on this podcast as the drama continues to unfold.

So what’s actually in the podcast this week?

It’s a very big episode and one I redrafted a couple of times, which is often a good sign. There is some accidental, yet, significant homage paid to a few of my recent trips to Ministry of Sound.

At said clubbing establishment, Norin & Rad played the Sick Individuals Remix of I Love by Icona Pop and the three-way SvD, Mark Knight and Underworld collab, Ten. Both appear here. Super8 & Tab dropped the Club Mix of Black Room Boy. Wasn’t sure about that Club Mix at first, but it is clearly huge. Newcomer, Kim Fai slipped us EDX & Leventina’s remix of Blood Pressure. Shazamed and duly noted for TPHP.

In searching for older tracks for this episode, it was reasonably inevitable that some Depeche Mode would sneak in there. The Essex synthpop giants released their new album, Delta Machine, recently. Unfortunately, it ain’t particularly good. In fact, it’s shit. But the disappointment of that has got me listening to Sounds Of The Universe from 2009 on repeat, an album which is, quite frankly, stupidly good. With Dave Gahan’s vocals on Perfect, as well as the voices of Ellie Goulding and Lana Del Rey, this episode does have an accessible touch to it.

And in other news, your ‘Tune Of The Episode’ is Broning’s Smash! and the final oldie is via Marco V.

The Phil-Harmonic Podcast Episode 54

Here we are again. The uplifting leg of our Phil-Harmonic journey swings around.

As weekends go this weekend has been a bit of a belter. One of the busiest and best I've had since moving to London, sampling both Paul Van Dyk and some truly great house music, whilst also catching up with so many friends and meeting some new people too.

And this week’s podcast is one that comfortably matches the magnitude of the last few days’ excesses. This one is pretty damn huge and contains a few stand out contenders for Tune Of The Year, even at this early stage of the year. It’s a full on trance thrill ride.

There was a lot of talk towards the end of 2012 about how many producers were planning to go back to their traditional trance roots. The whole ‘Who’s Afraid of 138?’ campaign has really picked up some momentum this year as the whole trouse fad starts to wear a little thin. Generally-speaking, the uplifting material coming out in 2013 has so far comfortably out-battled the slow-tempoed variants.

Every tune does some audio damage in this episode, but the real stand outs come one after the other in our middle section. The spellbindingly serene vocal breakdown in The Wind, the pure euphoria of Darren Porter’s Illustrious remix and, Tune Of The Episode, the all-round stunning, Phoenix by Matt Bukovski. Blue Soho have definitely been the label to watch out for in 2013.

Our final track is Alphazone under their little used or known Aramanja alias, their remix of Ibiza Sun. The original featured on Resonate 5 back in 2006. Evoking a little bit of summer with the Ibiza Specials approaching.

THE PHIL-HARMONIC PODCAST EPISODE 54

1. Estiva & Cardinal feat. Arielle Maren - Wait Forever (Daniel Kandi Remix) [Enhanced Recordings]
2. Purple Stories & Static Blue - Seoni (Falcon Remix) [Digital Society Recordings]
3. Bowdidge & Taylor - As It Should Be [Monster Digital]
4. C-Systems feat. Hanna Finsen - To Be [Unearthed Records]
5. Odonbat - The Wind [Blue Soho Recordings]
6. Dave Wright feat. MG - Illustrious (Darren Porter Remix) [Diverted Records]
7. Matt Bukovski - Phoenix [Blue Soho Recordings] <<<(Phil's Tune Of The Episode)>>>
8. Reverse - Empty Promises [Critical State]
9. Dash Berlin - Till The Sky Falls Down (Arctic Moon Remix) [Armada]
10. Jamie Walker - Boulevard [Subculture]
11. Johnson & Corbett vs. Alan M - Ibiza Sun (Aramanja Remix) [TranceTribe Recordings]
<<<(The Phil-Harmonic Golden Oldie)>>>

The tempo slides down again next week; I have a particularly housey episode on the cards. Until then!

The Phil-Harmonic Podcast Episode 53

TPHP rolls on and hopefully people are getting used to the more regular weekly format. But enough about the format; it's old news and we're all about forward thinking here.

An unusual episode this week in the sense that it draws on a number of artists and labels that are relative unknowns in more mainstream trance circles. The likes of Spin Twist, Future Focus and Sedna Recordings are not your Armada's and Anjuna's of the trance world. Great tracks here nevertheless.

Bar the opening couple of tracks, and probably our closing two as well, I've gone for quite a dark, at times aggressive, feel while still keeping the tempo quite steady. In all honesty, while not being my 'Tune Of The Episode',  Aerofoil's nasty new release, WoW!, really got me going and really forms the basis for this set's overall tone and direction.

Some sunnier vibes do open things up courtesy of Ad Brown's From Within, one of the early tracks in my recent set at Transcend's bank holiday special, and Super8 & Tab's Anjuna Volume 10 offering, L.A., a huge highlight from their set at Ministry Of Sound last weekend.

Watch out for a very cheeky bit of psytrance, something that is being reintroduced into the more mainstream scene at the moment via the likes of Simon Patterson, Bryan Kearney and Jordan Suckley. Klopfgeister is another name from Hamburg's absolutely thriving progressive psy scene and I finally got around to listen to his 2012 album, Smiles & More, a few weeks ago. Clearly one of the best electronic albums from last year.

Our Harmonic oldie this week was a hard one to pick. After the demonic rhythms of WoW! and the ominous piano of Face Value, I felt we needed to end on a more positive note. And positivity comes flowing courtesy of Grrreat's huge drop and relentlessly sunny melodic combinations. Another brilliant record from 2009 and one that really chases away those crap British weather blues. More of that sunshine to come on The Phil-Harmonic Podcast I can promise.

Only blot on the copybook this week is the very very brief moment when you can actually hear my printer disconnecting from the computer. Why I thought it would be a good idea to turn my printer off mid-recording I really don't know. Thank you Windows!

THE PHIL-HARMONIC PODCAST EPISODE 53

2. Super8 & Tab - L.A. [Anjunabeats]
3. Broning - New Dimension (Dart Rayne & Yura Moonlight Remix) [Interstate Recordings]
4. Klopfgeister - Jeff Vader (2012 Edit) [Spin Twist Records]
(taken from the album 'Smiles & More')
5. John O'Callaghan & Full Tilt feat. Karen Kelly - Breathe [Captivating Sounds]
6. W. Tuszynski - Music [Future Focus]
7. Alexandre Bergheau - Damavand [Blue Soho Recordings] <<<(Phil's Tune Of The Episode)>>>
8. Jochen Miller - Face Value (Jonas Stenberg Remix) [High Contrast Recordings]
9. Aerofoil - WoW! [Future Focus]
10. Allende - Veracity (Tasadi Remix) [Sedna Recordings]
11. Marc Marberg with Kyau & Albert - Grrreat [Euphonic] <<<(The Phil-Harmonic Golden Oldie)>>>

That's us done for this week. Some 138 action files your way next time. So long!
