The Phil-Harmonic Podcast Episode 6

Hi all,

May begins and here I am, straight back in there with some more trance goodness.

Last weekend I was out and about seeing Armin Van Buuren deliver a 4 hour mixing masterclass at Brixton’s O2 Academy. Despite the fact the audience were left full on melting in the venue’s humid, completely un- air-conditioned main room, Armin himself didn’t disappoint. Whatever people’s qualms about his overall track selection, anyone with even a semblance of appreciation for DJing as an art can’t help but be dazzled by his mixing style. I don’t care what anyone says, Armin deserves his DJ Mag No. 1 slot more than Tiesto ever did.

But what of this week’s mix?

Well, noticing that Episode 2 has been by far the most popular edition of this podcast so far and feeling that it might be worth staying on the hunt for new material for another week longer, I decided to dish up another 2 hours of big oldies. As promised, keeping you on your toes.

Unlike most episodes, there was very little actual planning to this one – I just whacked on Mainline by 4 Strings and rode the key scale from one end to the other and back again. Maybe that works in this mix’s favour, maybe it doesn’t. I’ll let you be the judge.

The likes of Time To Die, The Dawn, Ramsterdam and Killa are all tracks I’ve played a lot in my sets over the last few years and they make reappearances here alongside a handful more huge melodic oldies. There’s plenty of Sean Tyas and plenty of material from Mr. Van Buuren’s original ‘A State Of Trance’ label, which makes for another rocking 2 hours.

I also included DJs United – Remember Love, a track that Armin slipped into his 4 hour set last weekend and seemed to go down quite well with some of the people I was with. It seems as though with the first anniversary of last year’s horrific Love Parade disaster fast approaching, Armin is making sure we do remember – as was the slogan “We Will Never Forget”.
