The Phil-Harmonic Podcast Episode 33

2 weeks ago we dipped our toes into our 2012 Ibiza Specials and, I have to say, the reaction to Spotlight On Ibiza was nothing short of fantastic. That episode really took the podcast into some radical new territory and after being really nervous about putting it together, it now looks as though it was my best episode of the year so far. It was a very challenging episode to do and I 100% pulled it off.

One Ibiza Spotlight member said he was “blown away by the mix”; another joined my facebook group just say that it was “worthy of an Ibiza Beach Club residency” and that I should give up trance for more of the same. Fear not listeners – I’m not about to give up the trance, but comments like these had me swelling with pride.

But in being so proud of doing something so far out of my comfort zone, it was always inevitable that in returning to my comfort zone there would be a dose of reality to be tasted. Don’t get me wrong – this week’s set is littered with many great tunes and is a solid example of my usual format but, overall, it proves that there’s still work to do with my DJing. Even as a trance DJ, there are things to iron out.

As mentioned, I’ve had to do a little shuffling of my schedule of late and we’ve got 2 more regular episodes before I go back to the Ibiza Specials. One is a nice, summery, chilled out affair; this one is a full on, ballsy ride, mixing house, electro, nasty tech and the usual uplifting shit.

I won’t spend too much time describing every track this week but I will just say that picking my favourites from this one wasn’t easy at all. For ‘Tune Of The Episode’ I’ve gone for the long-awaited full version of Shamballa, a dark, deep collaboration between Erick Strong and Dart Rayne. The breakdown is maybe the best of the year so far. I’m also a huge, huge fan of Mike Koglin’s follow-up to Dyno, the fantastic Varana on Captivating Sounds.

I've also plumped for the Club mix of Super8 & Tab’s new single, Black Is Back. Why not go for the more appreciated and much loved ‘Classic Vocal Mix’? Oh, don’t worry, it’s one of my favourites of the year so far and I have much bigger designs for it. Watch this space!

Our ending oldie this week is from one of those artists that in a relatively brief window produced 4, 5 or maybe even 6 of the finest modern trance records ever produced. In 2006 and 2007, Swedish producer Jezper Söderlund released Escape, For The Fallen, One Tear Away, Garden State and Rest In Peace. Trance fans will be divided as to which is best, but Garden State seemed to end things very nicely here - a more melancholic vibe coming off the back of the ‘pure bass’ of Arctic Moon’s remix of Whatever Happens.
