One thing TPHP can’t be accused of is constantly hammering the same style. Another is never coming up with something different.
I find that a number of radio shows and podcasts, from
professionals and amateurs, have really nailed their colours to the mast these
days. You’re either ‘US-influenced’ EDM trouse music a la Hardwell, Estiva or
Marcus Schossow, you’re either dark mid-tempo stuff like a Markus Schulz or,
like most of the DJs I share the airwaves with at Renegade Transmission, you’re
a full blooded 138+ DJ. Most are either the former or the latter; with all the
bickering that goes on in between. Whatever the style, people seem to be pretty
set on what they do, and you can sure it’ll be the same this week as it was
last.
For me, the longer I DJ the more I yearn to really mix
styles up; the more I want a podcast to be a 1 hour melting pot. This brings
its own problems and we are by no means at our stylistic end point yet. There is
actually no end point to be achieved, I think.
In the opening 20-30 mins of this week’s Episode 65, you may
not be quite sure where the set is going, as it segways in and out of the
melodic, the cheesey, the dirty and the dark. But somehow, it does fit together
and it does eventually go somewhere.
The mixing isn’t perfect and the more holistic approach may
be missed by some people, but what I love about this week’s is the unusual
combinations that actually work, most notably the mix out of the very modern
electro sounding Arigatou into the demonic trance/hard trance meshing (the old
school staple of ID&T) of Lost Myself In The Way You Close Your Eyes from
2004. When I split the podcast in two and made it a weekly show, the end goal
was really to create far more of these unheard of combinations and use them as
centre pieces. This one works a treat.
By a similar token, Marcel Wood’s Yellin @ The Neighbours
will be a track I expect most people haven’t heard in ages. The phrase ‘they
don’t make um like they used to’ springs to mind. While the latest Mike Koglin
collab, Crunk, has me thinking, ‘maybe they do’. Some real 2005-2006 era tech
trance vibes on that record.
Also, look out for our ‘Tune Of The Episode’ (and so far
vocal of the year) Discover by Faruk Sabanci and Jaren. Absolutely incredible
vocal and one that resonates with me hugely at the moment.
